You know bunch rot is coming; it’s just a matter of the right conditions.  We can offer you a forward-looking biorational solution called Mevalone®.  It’s a new class of fungicide for bunch rot and powdery mildew control in grapes which utilizes a novel soft chemistry and truly unique mode of action.

Let’s get into the basics of Mevalone®:

The active ingredients are three terpenes: eugenol, derived from clove oil, thymol, derived from garden thyme, and geraniol derived from Damask rose, and Mevalone has been given the FRAC group BM01.  Mevalone® uses proprietary Sustaine® technology developed by Eden Research.

This technology microencapsulates the terpenes and enables a controlled release action upon hydration. As a result, the terpenes remain at the crop canopy and bunches, prolonging their antifungal activity across multiple rehydration rain events.

Sustaine® is derived from yeast and is naturally degraded in the soil and the technology is a major development in phased-release products, as the formulation is an effective product that does not introduce microplastics into the environment like other microencapsulated formulations.

Flowering is the most important phase for bunch rot control as it allows the terpenes to get fully dispersed within the bunch, before closure.

• Mevalone® can be applied up to four times per season from flowering to harvest, reducing the potential of sporulation.
• Mevalone® is a homogeneous liquid formulation that is perfectly dispersible in water and is stable in tank mixes.
• It can be used preventively before a rainy event, based on forecast models or after a rain event based on the grape varieties’ sensitivity.

Some important points to note:

1. Mevalone® has been tested extensively in California, Oregon, and Washington state on the major wine grape varieties. In addition, it’s also been tested by itself as a standalone Botrytis solution and as a rotational partner with other competitive standards.
2. Tests have also shown that there is no risk of interference with fermentation or the winemaking process, and there is no effect on aromas or the taste of wine.
3. In the US, Europe and Australia, Mevalone® is exempted from the requirement of Maximum Residue Limit—or MRLs—so grapes and grape commodities treated with Mevalone® can be exported from the US and freely imported into these countries.
4. Mevalone® is registered in 18 states including California.
