This month’s Sonoma County Vineyard Technical Group Seminar will feature Dr. James Campbell covering the impact of heat on color development in red wine grapes. Dr. Campbell is an assistant project scientist, in Dr. Elisabeth Forrestel’s lab, at the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Campbell earned his Ph.D. in Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry from UC Davis in 2021, focusing on the interactions between tannins and anthocyanins during grape ripening and their impact on wine quality. Dr. Campbell has presented his research at various industry events, including most recently at the “On the Road in Sonoma County” seminar in March 2025, where he gave a summarized presentation of what we’ll hear in this meeting. In addition to his research and presentations, Dr. Campbell has been featured in publications such as the San Francisco Chronicle, discussing the impact of climate change on wine grape characteristics. His work continues to influence the field of viticulture and enology, particularly in understanding how environmental factors affect grape development and wine production.
